Delilah

Oh, dear sweet Jesus and all the saints in heaven what is wrong with you, Delilah? You’re not a day away from Earl, even the bruises are still tender, and already you’re having thoughts you shouldn’t be having about the first guy you see? When will you learn?

But the rest of me says he’s tall and dark and there’s something in his gaze that makes my skin tingle. He’s devouring me with his eyes. I can’t find anything in me that wants to complain, not even a little. Mama would be so proud.

He surprises me when he says my name but then he mentions my cabin and I relax. Of course, he’d know the name of his guests. I need to stop assuming the worst in people.

“Yes. I’m Delilah.”

His voice is like velvet, deep and lush. He offers me his hand. “Nice to meet you, Delilah. I’m Miles Quinn.”

His large hand envelops mine, and the moment we make contact a zing of electricity runs through me from my hands all the way down to my toes. It’s an actual jolt that raises gooseflesh on my skin.

He holds me in his grasp while he speaks. “My apologies for the mix up with the basket. Justina left me a note about a problem in one of the cabins today. I must have misread.” He lets go of my hand and it feels like the temperature in the room drops a degree.

“Miles.” Even his name is soothing to say. “It’s no trouble, really.”

We stand there, staring at each other and then I realize he’s looking at my cheek, at the bruise Earl gave me. I turn away instinctively as my shame brings a flush to my cheeks. “Well, I should probably get back…”

“Well, now that you’re here, let me buy you a drink? For your trouble?” He smiles enticingly and I’m struck by how charming it feels. I can’t remember the last time a man tried to woo me.

I step toward the counter. “You don’t like anyone to be inconvenienced, do you?”

He laughs, a soft, sexy sound. “Not if I can help it.”

Oh, dear sweet Jesus and all the saints. I can’t believe I’m doing it but I smile despite myself. “A drink sounds nice.”

“Right this way.” He holds out his arm, pointing across the room.

I follow him through the lodge’s great room to a small bar built into the far wall next to the fireplace. A large square U of leather couches fills the main area in front of the hearth, and five leather barstools line up beneath the bar counter.

I slide onto a stool and Miles steps behind the bar. “What are you having?”

“How about a glass of wine?”

He moves around behind the bar and comes back with four bottles, three different reds and a white. I point to a bottle of merlot.

“Excellent choice.” He opens the merlot and pours two glasses for us and then hands one to me.

I hold up my glass. “What should we drink to?”

“New beginnings?” He arches a brow at me and raises his glass.
